         Goddess Saraswat

Goddess Saraswati

Saraswati

Saraswati is shakti, the power and consort of Brahma the creator. Hence she is Mother of all creation. Saraswati means the flowing one. In Rgveda she represents a river and the deity presiding over it. Hence she is connected with fertility and purification. Her other names are : Sarada (giver of essence), Vagiswari (mistress of speech), Brahmi (wife of Brahma), Mahavidya (knowledge supreme). It is obvious that the concept of Saraswati in later literature is already here. The flowing one can represent speech also if is taken in allegorical sense. Perfect speech means power and intelligence.
She is considered as the personification of all knowledge - arts, sciences, crafts and skills she has to be extraordinarily beautiful and graceful. Clad in spotless white apparel and seated on a lotus seat, she holds in her four hands Veena, rosary and book. She plays Veena, it means cultivation of fine arts. Rosary held in right hand symbolises all spiritual knowledge, austerity, meditation and repetition of divine names. By holding book in the left hand is she obviously teaching that spiritual sciences are more important then secular one.
